alex.jpgWhen Alex Hold, 11, put on his skis and hit the slopes at Thredbo for the first time he wasn't in pain or tired - he felt like a normal boy.
Alex suffers from Scleroderma,a disease which causes his immune system to attack the muscles, joints and bones.
Once a week Alex has chemotherapy injections and also makes monthly visits to hospital for high doses of steroids which leave him tired and sore.
It was always Alex's wish to go skiing and thanks to the Starlight Children's Foundation he spent a week at the snow with his family.
His mother, Tracey, said they could not have been more grateful to Starlight for making Alex's wish come true and giving them family memories that will last forever.
"Due to medical expenses we could have never given him a holiday", she said.
"It was great to go to Thredbo because we were always in Brisbane three or four times a year for medical appointments."
Mrs Hold said some nights Alex woke in pain and every day was a struggle.
She said Alex was a natural skier and stood up the first time he skied.
"It was great going somehwere where I didn't have to go to any medical visits - I was just having fun," Alex said.
Fifty cents from every Queensland entry sold in Gold Lotto's $19m Superdraw will be donated to the Starlight Children's Foundation, up to a total of $800,000.
These funds are vital as the Foundation currently only reaches one in three of all 600,000 child hospital admissions in Australia each year.
"It just makes me smile that money from Gold Lotto entries will go to Starlight; it means someone else gets their wish granted. It is a great way to raise money and help do something," Mrs Hold said.
It wasn't just the holiday that Starlight helped with, she said, but the fun centres they funded where Alex got to watch movies and play games when he was in hospital.
Entries in the $19m Superdraw are available from Golden Casket shops for as little as $2.20.
